Day 359: The agony of defeat

Out here in the west where the air is dry, we use a special kind of air conditioner that cools the air by evaporating water. The water line for the air conditioner runs through the attic. Last July, after completely redoing the drywall of the ceiling throughout the living room and most of the kitchen, the husband turned the water on for the air conditioner and then promptly left town for 2 weeks. I also left town for 1.5 weeks at the same time.

You know where this is going.

I returned home from my trip to find a big soggy saggy mess of ceiling drywall. When it was all said and done, a huge portion of the drywall had to be removed and replaced.

Leak

I called our contractor and he sent some guys out to replace the drywall and retexture the ceiling. This was last July. As I mentioned the other day, late last week I finally got up the courage to re-prime and re-paint the area.

Gettin' ready to paint

And guess what? My worst fear came true. The texture of the new portion not only isn't anywhere close to matching the original texture, now that it is all painted, the difference sticks out like a massive sore thumb.

I could have screamed. Actually, I think I might have screamed.

The only thing I can think of to do is skim coat the repaired part and then bring out the guys who originally did the texture in the rest of the house and have them retexture the entire living room and kitchen ceiling to blend everything together.

And if you're following along, you know that means that when they are done I'll have to re-prime and re-paint this area. Again. For the third time.

Oh, the agony of defeat.

  1. Ugh - drywall texture is a b*tch. We had a melting snow leak the first year in our new house(blew in during one of our famous Eastern Plain storms) and, I have to say, even the professionals couldn't get ours right after two tries. But you only see it if you're looking for it. Sorry!

  2. Aarrrggghhh. I can hear ya from here!

Ok...have you thought about trying to re-texture yourself? I've done it before...pretty seamlessly. But it was always a way highly more textured wall (more wriggle room). Any way you slice it, it is going to need a total ceiling paint.

Or...you could do what I ALSO do. Ignore it and go on to the next ptoject...and kick yourself for never finishing things...then go have a glass of wine.

    Just a suggestion.

  3. I did think about trying it myself, but it is such a light texture that it would be hard to match. For the last several months I've done exactly that: Ignore it and move on to other projects (AND have a glass of wine!) But I'm running out of other projects to move on to, and I'm just ready to be done with it. So I'm going to bite the bullet and have the guys back out here to re-texture the whole thing. Blech!
